麥桿菊，學名Xerochrysum bracteatum，屬於菊科，蠟菊屬，原產於澳洲。
麥桿菊，也稱作蠟菊，可以從它如蠟一般的質感了解這個別稱被命名的原因。我們欣賞「類似花瓣」的部位並不是真正的花朵，而是它的苞片，苞片帶有蠟質的光澤，質地觸摸起來猶如乾燥的人造花。
麥桿菊屬於可自然乾燥的花材，建議以倒掛的方式放置在通風的陰涼處，倒掛約5-7天即可製作成天然的乾燥麥桿菊；建議在倒掛乾燥前，可以先去除它所有的葉片，因為其葉片乾燥後會皺皺的，較不美觀，但如果喜歡自然呈現的乾燥麥桿菊，還是可以適時保留些許葉子的。
麥桿菊的英文有「稻草花」的意思，因為蠟質苞片互相摩擦時的聲音，就像乾燥稻草彼此摩擦所發出的沙沙聲。麥桿菊的另一個英文名名為Everlasting，意即「永恆的花」，如同這款花材的特性，如紙質般的乾硬花瓣，乾燥後的麥桿菊顏色依然鮮豔，因此也有人稱麥桿菊為「不老菊」。
麥桿菊常見顏色有黃、紅、褐、白、粉紅、橘等色，通常我們從花市買回一整把麥桿菊花材，整把會含有各種不同顏色，不會先將花朵顏色分類後才進行販售。
菊，諧音「吉」，配上橘黃、橘紅等喜氣的顏色，在春節期間以能夠保存鮮豔顏色的麥桿菊裝飾居家環境，象徵一整年都能吉祥如意、喜氣洋洋。

Strawflower, scientifically known as Xerochrysum bracteatum, belongs to the Asteraceae family and the Helichrysum genus and is native to Australia.
The strawflower, also known as everlasting or Helichrysum, gets its name from its waxy texture, resembling wax. The vibrant parts we see are not the actual flowers but rather its bracts. These bracts have a waxy sheen and a texture that feels like dried artificial flowers.
Strawflowers are a type of material that can naturally dry. It is recommended to hang them upside down in a well-ventilated, cool place for 5-7 days to create natural dried strawflowers. It’s also advised to remove all the leaves before drying, as the leaves tend to become wrinkled and less aesthetically pleasing after drying. However, if you prefer the naturally dried appearance of strawflowers with some leaves retained, you can choose to keep a few leaves as needed.
The English name for strawflower is derived from the sound produced when the waxy bracts rub against each other, similar to the rustling sound of dry straw rubbing against each other. Another English name for strawflower is “Everlasting,” indicating the flower’s most prominent feature – its papery, durable petals. Even after drying, strawflowers retain their vibrant colors, leading to the alternate name of “Everlasting” and the nickname “immortal flower.”
Strawflowers come in various colors such as yellow, red, brown, white, pink, and orange, radiating enduring vitality. The word for chrysanthemum sounds like “luck” in Chinese, and when paired with auspicious colors like orange and red, strawflowers are used to decorate homes during the Chinese New Year. In both name and color, they symbolize good luck and auspiciousness, adding a touch of everlasting brightness to the household during the festive season.
