✿ Flower Recognition Moment ep 6 / Chamomile
Growing in adversity, being resilient and fearless, and not easily bowing to difficulties is the floriography of the chamomile. Whenever someone wants to buy flowers to encourage friends or loved ones who are facing adversity or setbacks, we recommend choosing chamomile.
Chamomile, scientifically known as Matricaria chamomilla, belongs to the Asteraceae family and is commonly known as German chamomile. It is originally native to Europe and Western Asia.
The appearance of chamomile is like a small flower that we would instinctively draw on a blank sheet of paper, with white petals and yellow pistil, resembling a daisy. How do we differentiate between these two types of flowers?
Firstly, by observing the petals of both, you will notice that chamomile’s petals are shorter and rounder, with larger gaps between them, while daisies have longer, slender petals with almost no gaps between them.
Secondly, in terms of leaf shape, chamomile has wider leaves, while daisies have narrower leaves with larger spaces between them.
Lastly, some people may detect a strong scent from daisies, which can also be one way to distinguish between chamomile and daisies.
Apart from being used as an ornamental flower, chamomile can also be used in tea and herbal remedies, offering benefits such as calming nerves, relieving pain, and improving sleep quality. It’s important to note that the chamomile you buy in flower markets or flower shops is for decorative purposes and not suitable for consumption. Chamomile for consumption should be purchased from Chinese herbal medicine pharmacies or food ingredient stores. Additionally, if you are taking sleeping pills or blood pressure medication, it is not advisable to consume chamomile tea. For detailed precautions, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional.
The chamomile essential oil, extracted from chamomile, has a calming effect and can be used for various purposes in body care and inflammation relief.
If you wish to try buying a bouquet of chamomiles to place in a vase for admiration, there is a video tutorial by florist Ni-Yen demonstrating how to arrange a single bouquet of chamomile at home. 🌱 Reminder:
Before placing chamomiles in a vase, it’s advisable to remove some of the leaves to reduce water evaporation and facilitate nutrient transfer to the flowers. If the stems get stuck below the vase’s neck, it’s recommended to remove them to prevent stem breakage, which can lead to premature wilting and a shorter display period for the flowers.
